Round the Wrong Bend

“Suicide is Painless”, Johnny Mandel
Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see…
“Some days, I can barely keep up. Just think, if we could turn my brain into a horse, I’d win every Kentucky Derby in a landslide.” He snorted. “I get told to slow down. How do you slow down? That’d be one hell of a trick. It’d be nice, being able to slow down, being able to slow down and not stop."
“Into the Ocean”, Blue October
Now floating up and down
I spin, colliding into sound
Like whales beneath me diving down
I'm sinking to the bottom of my
Everything that freaks me out
The lighthouse beam has just run out
I'm cold as cold as cold can be
be
“Thinkin Bout You”, Frank Ocean
Yes, of course
I remember, how could I forget (how could I forget)?
How you feel (how you feel)?
You know you were my first time (time).
A new feel
It won't ever get old, not in my soul,
Not in my spirit, keep it alive (spirit, keep it alive)
We'll go down this road
'Til it turns from color to black and white
"You don’t take this place seriously, which puts you far ahead of the rest of us.”
Hawkeye thought about correcting her, but then decided why bother? She’d figure it out eventually, everyone would, the difference between wearing a mask and actual armor.
“Rainy Days and Mondays”, The Carpenters
What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out
We know what it's all about
Hangin' around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.
“Hourglass”, Mindy Gledhill
When you reach for the stars
Don’t forget who you are
And please don’t turn around and grow up way too fast
See the sand in my grasp
From the first to the last
Every grain becomes a memory of the past
Oh, life’s an hourglass
Life’s an hourglass
Charles snorted. “Is this destined to be my fate? Turning into a borderline alcoholic degenerate with the sense of humor of a pre-adolescent? Is that the only way one learns to cope with this festering, fetid wasteland?”
“You lost your first kid today, so I’m going to let that slide,” Hawkeye said easily, downing his drink.
“Hate Me”, Blue October
Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you
“Light of Day”, Bruce Springsteen
Well, I'm a little hot wired, but I'm feeling OK
And I got a little lost down along the way
Well, I'm just around the corner 'til the light of day, yeah
I'm just around the corner 'til the light of day, yeah
“Better In Time”, Leona Lewis
Thought I couldn't live without you
It's gonna hurt when it heals too, ooh yeah
(It'll all get better in time)
And even though I really love you,
I'm gonna smile cause I deserve to
It'll all get better in time
“I Bombed Korea”, Cake
And so I sit here at this bar.
I'm not a hero.
I'm not a movie star.
I've got my beer.
I've got my stories to tell,
But they won't tell you what it's like in hell.

“Listen, I get it—”
“No,” said George, and there was steel in his tone all of a sudden, “you don’t. But thanks for trying.”
Hawkeye met his eyes. He should have said, “Actually, I do,” and watched that defiant glint dissipate like a cloud of smoke.

He got up to introduce himself to Nurse Reynolds, receiving a polite, if obviously indifferent, response in return. Shaking his head at the setback, he returned to his table with Father Mulcahy.
“See, that’s what I’m talking about, Hawkeye,” he said, grinning. “Look at how well you did just there.”

“Hey,” Trapper said, giving him that sly, irresistible grin he was so damn good at, “we’ve got three whole days of R and R, remember?”
Hawkeye matched him, irresistible grin for irresistible grin, and said, “How could I forget?”

“It seems ridiculous that they expect you to go somewhere and do such amazing, complicated things, and to see so much, and somehow not be affected, like you can just revert back to ‘normal’, whatever that is, as soon as you’re back.”
